Lapis is a beautiful 4 month old, sable GSD/Malinois + cross that would thrive in a home with an experienced Malinois or high drive, working line GSD. He needs slow and proper introductions when meeting new people or dogs. He has a very vocal and typical Maligator play-style (rowdy, loud, and obnoxious). Some pros: an absolute angel to bathe, extremely intelligent/trainable, wants to connect with his person, and vocal: playtime, fear, or food. He has started crate-training and is quiet during nap times. He has also started potty-training (gets 90% outside). Lapis already knows that he needs to Sitz and work for all of his food, toys, and treats. He is very sweet, affectionate, and cuddly towards his FoMom. Not reactive to horses so far: was timid and hid behind FoMom. He will bark at cats or any creature that he perceives as being scary/menacing. A few cons: he is aloof outside and growls/ barks/and runs away from new people or dogs at first. He is a dominant/alpha dog and has no problem challenging the 90 lb, intact, male GSD and 70 lb alpha female Mal foster sibling to back off "his" toys and food. His resource guarding will continue to be an issue as he ages and will need to be managed. Proper training with a professional K9 trainer will help manage most of these areas. Lapis' ideal adopter will be a strong leader that provides a structured routine to keep his dominance, insecurity, and fear-based (puppy fears) reactivity in check, and focused on helping him reach his full potential with his working breed background. His former foster said he was the most dominant, feisty, alpha, and resource guarder out of all his 5 siblings, so please keep his temperament in mind and don't just fall in love with his looks. He would do best in a quiet environment with light foot traffic and stimuli, as well as, with a submissive or neutral fur-sibling. A home with young children or young dogs, or a dog that is toy possessive is not an ideal fit. Diamond and her pups Peridot, Beryl, Lapis, Amethyst, Coral, and Garnet were surrendered by their owner in Texas to a partner rescue. They have never been contained properly and the previous litters Diamond had were all run over by cars. They arrived in Virginia on April 29th.
