Alex 0411

We met Rooney (SSR's Alex) at his foster’s house and right away our other male, Guinness, relaxed around him and laid next to Rooney. We knew then that he was our boy! Rooney was so adorable, like a little teddy bear, and he had just the right amount of goofy and sweet. He is a such a cuddler and has a sweet disposition. We just love him! He gets along great with Guinness and Molly, our other GSDs, and our 2 cats, Bella and Abbey. It was really helpful to know before going to meet him that he did well with cats and other dogs. Our pack would not be complete without him.

We’ve had Rooney about 5 months and while he is a super sweet, willing to please, smart boy, we have faced some challenges. Shortly after adopting him, we realized he had some big fears of being left alone. We worked closely with our veterinarian and also sought out a behavior therapist to help us help Rooney work through some of his anxiety. We are still working on it, but he has improved and we think starting to realize he is home and we will come back. Through working with a trainer, we also discovered he was most likely not treated very nicely by some people in the past. He will cower if he sees us with something over our head, with anything long that has a handle. He also will cower if we get too excited and raise our voices. We are working through these fears and doing our best to make sure he knows that no one will ever hurt him again.

When we were facing some of our challenges with Rooney, the SSR adopters page was a great resource and community for support. Everyone was helpful with suggestions and reassurances that sometimes the adjustment period can take longer for some dogs than others. This really helped us to stay patient with Rooney’s acclimation to being home and to trust that in time he will be okay.

We couldn’t imagine a better fit for our pack and love him to pieces. There isn’t anything we wouldn’t do for him.

Barron 0408

Why wait , when you know you know right?......

That’s the case with Barron's adoption story. Meet Wendy and her family. Wendy found Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue through her kids hockey program. One of the other hockey moms is a foster for SSR and had brought her foster dog to the hockey rink and Wendy fell in love with the idea of helping to save these amazing dogs.

Wendy began her research and after seeing the great dogs Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue is helping and the support system that SSR has in place she decided she wanted to do what she could in making a difference for these beautiful dogs.

Wendy’s husband works around Malinois working dogs and they had always talked about how rewarding it would be to have a high drive dog so when she came across Barron and the emergency call for a foster....She KNEW she had to step in!

Now, Barron’s adoption story is very uncommon and unique. Fosters are usually not permitted to adopt the dogs they are fostering for many different reasons. The idea of committing to be a foster is to help the rescue dogs find their forever homes. Of course it would be easy to fall in the love with your foster dog but fosters understand they are there to help the dog transition to the forever home while caring for their immediate needs.

In Barron’s case he had been with the rescue for a while and there was zero interest from approved adopters. Wendy was able to adopt Barron and she pledged to continue to foster other rescue dogs. Wendy fulfilled that pledge and since adopting Barron she has helped two rescues find their forever homes. Way to go Wendy!

As with any new endeavors there are usually some challenges to be expected. When Wendy was asked to explain some of the challenges since bringing Barron home she explained some of the obstacles and the positive outcomes:

 1. Crate training, major fail!  They think a crate might have been used as a punishment for him in the past and he was very upset if put in the crate (as in made himself bloody trying to get out). They now put him in the laundry room with TWO gates (hahaha mom, you’ve seen how high I jump, right?!) and Barron is doing well with this.

2. High drive dog- if Barron isn’t physically exercised well he will find something to do and it’s usually not good! (Pictured in the beginning of the story)

3. Barron was heartworm positive coming from Texas. Wendy explained that it was hard for her and her husband to put him through the treatment but they knew it had to be done. They could tell Barron trusted them and came to them for comfort when he didn’t feel well.

When Wendy was asked to explain the positives that Barron has brought to her home she stated “Can I just say love 5 times?  This guy loves us all but he is seriously attached to my husband. My husband likes dogs, but Barron, He LOVES Barron. Those two are inseparable. Like seriously, mommy who?

Barron still had some more surprises for his new family! The previous foster had not discovered any of Barron’s training that he already knew. The first night home, Wendy told him to lay down in German and down he went! Barron knew German! With some further exploration they also figured out he was trained in protection and have enjoyed doing bite work with him. They use a bite sleeve, give the correct command, and watch out....Incoming fur missile!!!!

Thank you to Wendy and her family for taking a chance on Barron and giving him the love he deserves.

P.S. Wendy’s family decided they love the breed so much they added a five month old malinois puppy from Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue to. The more the merrier right!

Tonka 0452

Shares on Facebook matter! Tonka’s adoption story began with just that.

Meet Michelle. She came across Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue because one of her Facebook friends shared a post and it showed up on her news feed. The post was asking for a donation for a dog in a sad situation and she donated and it all started from there!

Michelle’s family has a 14 year old female dog, Illy and an 8 year old female dog, Isis, who are very bonded. They wanted to adopt a companion for Isis so she wouldn't be alone after Illy eventually passes. Michelle wanted the new dog to have a chance to bond with Isis before that happened. Michelle’s family had been interested in a few dogs, but Isis is dog selective and she was not a fan of the puppies getting in her face and not paying attention to her body language when she needed space. They knew Isis would need a dog that was more relaxed so they kept their eyes glued to SSR page for new dogs.

Tonka popped up right after she was rescued and Michelle just said, “That's our dog”.  Tonka was basically a raw red lump with ears. Michelle said there was something about the look on her face and her ears that drew them in. They heard from the foster that Tonka seemed mild mannered - more on the calm side. They knew Isis would have to meet Tonka to see how they would get along. By this point, Michelle’s daughter already renamed Tonka to Bella, because she thought Bella was so beautiful, raw skin and all. Tonka aka “Bella ‘s” foster mom met them halfway between their houses at a dog park for the meet and greet. When the family saw Bella, their heart soared. She was in an oversized doggy coat because her fur was still so patchy from the mange recovery. She was velcroed to her foster mom and you could tell she was nervous, but she was still interested in everything and everyone. Their dog Isis sniffed her and walked away. From that point they knew they wanted her. The dogs got along, they fell in love - and they were approved!

The first 6 days after bringing Bella home were a little tough. They worked on acclimating Isis to having a new dog in the pack - that was pretty much their only real concern. Isis did better than expected - after 6 days Bella and Isis were best friends. They now spend all morning wrestling, inside the house and out. They walk beautifully together. They share their beds and chew toys. It's everything they could have asked for!

Bella has brought pure joy to Michelle and her family. She is a silly, loving, velcro dog. She has brought an energy and playfulness to their family. Michelle explained “No matter how bad my day is going, if I lie down on the floor, Bella will get up from wherever she is, walk over to me, lick my face, and lie down next to me. It's the best therapy in the world. She makes us laugh every day”.

Harper 0407

In a time with so many discouraging stories it is a great opportunity to celebrate in the world of dog rescue. Harper was rescued by SSR from a high-kill shelter in south-Texas. She was around 1 year old when she was placed with her foster family. She had plenty of energy and love for playing with other dogs. She had a beautiful black coat and the softest ears. She was great with children and loved her people. And while it is always great to focus on the positives Harper also had some challenges. She was known to be mouthy, jumpy, and had zero manners. She walked on her foster’s island and even the kitchen table. She barked quite a bit and pulled on her leash. She had quite the prey drive and did not do well with cats or chickens. Thankfully Harper found a family that was willing to work through all of her challenging behaviors. She was adopted by a police officer and his young son. Harper goes on daily runs with her human and has been able to train with K-9 handlers. With all of her training she no longer bolts toward cats and has even improved her leash manners. She also has the best gift any dog could ask for-a boy who she adores. Harper is a great example of what SSR has been able to do to change the lives of not only the dogs but those who choose to make them part of their family.

Maverick 0047

Have you heard the saying “You don’t find the dog, the dog finds you”? Well this is exactly the case in our story of Maverick and his “meant to be” family with Julie and C.J.

Julie and C.J. knew they wanted to rescue. Julie began her basic google search which lead her to Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue. After reviewing the website, facebook and instagram for SSR Julie knew this was the rescue for her and her husband C.J.. As Julie scrolled through the beautiful dogs looking for their forever homes .... there was Maverick! When I asked Julie how she choose Maverick as the dog she was interested in she said “There was something about one of the pictures Dana (Maverick’s Foster) posted online that I just fell in love with at first sight”. Julie explained that Maverick was sprawled out in front of sliding glass doors looking up at the camera like “what!.... am I in your spot”? Julie wasn’t sure why she loved this picture but she was convinced she had to learn more about Maverick!

When adopting an “older” dog, it is important to do you research and find out as much information that you can. Dana ( Maverick’s foster) and Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue were very DETAILED and HONEST about Maverick’s history and past aggression issues. Dana explained that Maverick would be completely fine one minute with someone and then out of no where Maverick would begin barking aggressively at you and may try to nip at your feet. There was not always an obvious trigger for Maverick’s behavior and to please have an open mind when meeting with Maverick. Julie and C.J. had concerns but did not let these concerns stop them from wanting to meet Maverick! Julie had grown up with German Shepherds and had experience with their protective nature. They both knew that by making the decision of not wanting to adopt a puppy there were going to be challenges and they were ready to work!

Dana(Maverick’s foster) and Julie spoke several times on the phone before the first meeting and came up with a plan to try to help Maverick not feel threatened during the meet and greet. Julie admitted she was nervous when first entering Dana’s house to meet Maverick. She was pleasantly surprised when Maverick ran up and sniffed her. He didn't seem to pay much attention to her. Dana gave Julie and C.J. some treats and they started giving him a few commands and things seemed to be going smoothly. Then, just like Dana had warned them, out of nowhere Maverick switched and aggressively barked at Julie for no apparent reason. Dana had prepared them and told Julie to immediately say "no, Maverick", which they did and Maverick immediately stood down. Maverick needed a minute or two to calm down but once he felt comfortable he came back to Julie for a treat and let her pet him. They played outside with Maverick and about an hour in to playtime Julie and C.J. were on the ground cuddled up with Maverick. Julie explained, “Just like when I first saw the picture, there was something about him that made my hesitations go away. To be honest, we wanted a dog that would be a bit protective. My husband is a police officer and works nights so I'm alone a good amount and wanted to have that bit of security”. Julie also recognized that Maverick would have to be comfortable and ok with people entering their home.

Julie was ready to take Maverick home that day but her husband suggested they needed to prepare their home for Maverick’s arrival. They came back a week later and the same incident occurred. Maverick seemed fine then snapped a little but Julie and C.J. quickly put him in his place and Maverick calmed down.

Since the day Maverick jumped into Julie and C.J.’s truck to go home , they haven't experienced any aggression issues towards them. Julie stated “It was like he knew we were his new peeps. He settled in pretty quickly and didn't have as much anxiety as I was worried about”.

When Julie was asked about the top three challenges since  Maverick’s adoption and how Julie and C.J. have been working to overcome these Julie stated, “This may sound like a lie but there are not three challenges with Maverick. There is just one major challenge and that is his unpredictability with strangers. He is amazing when it's just us - listens (mostly), knows basic commands, the best snuggler, no chewing obsession (unless it's his toys), house and crate trained , but when introducing him to new people, you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes he's perfectly fine and you just get a bark or two. Other times, it's very aggressive and he nips at people's feet. We've been really trying to socialize him with people more but it's hard to get volunteers. Not a ton of people are raising their hands when you ask them to come over and see if your dog will react negatively to them”.

The couple recognized Maverick is going to need more help than just what they can give him so in July Maverick will start an 8-week program that focuses on obedience and dog aggression. They are very hopeful that this will help figure out his triggers (if there is one) and make him less anxious with new people.

Maverick has completed Julie and C.J.’s family. Julie and C.J. purchased a home last year. They do not plan on having children but they knew they wanted a dog.  Adopting a German Shepherd from SSR was such a monumental milestone in their life and they know Maverick was the piece they were looking for to complete their little family.

Julie expressed her feelings of how nice it is to have Maverick to come home to after work. He may not be able to talk back but they have lots of chats and glasses of wine (water for him, of course) during commercials while watching Grey's Anatomy!

Julie and C.J. have found the are more active outside. Maverick forces them to get up, take him out, play, etc. Julie is training for a half marathon and Maverick does really well on the hands-free leash and has turned into a pretty good partner.

CJ wanted a riding partner for a long time. Maverick has filled that void! He LOVES riding in trucks and cars which is another reason they want to get him socialized more so they can take him more places! Julie was kind enough to share a snapshot of their beautiful relationship when she explained, “I'll make a cup of coffee, sit on the couch with a book and Maverick will lay on the couch with me and place his head in my lap. I think Maverick's favorite hobby is to stare out the living room window and check out what our neighbors are doing”.

Maverick’s absolute favorite thing to do is play fetch (but only with balls, he doesn't seem to care about sticks or frisbees. He loves to prance (yes, prance) with his ball in the yard. After he gets warm from running around, he will put his paws in his water bowl. Julie said “we thought it was super cute at first...then we started finding water everywhere , We still get a kick out of it and laugh every time”!

Thank you to Dana and Julie and C.J. for taking a chance on Maverick! For not giving up and supporting Maverick with the time, patience, help , training and most importantly the LOVE that he deserves!
