Introduction - Please Read Before Submitting The Foster Application

If you are considering becoming a foster, please take a moment to think carefully about the commitment you are planning to make as well as the commitment SSR will make to you. As a foster, you will not only be caring for the foster dog, but providing bios, updates, and pictures for our websites.  We would like you to bring your foster dog to local adoption events so the dog has even more exposure.

For SSR, many volunteer hours are involved in moving your foster application forward. We start with an interview, then do reference checks, and finally conduct a home visit. After an applicant has been approved, we work with the foster as they take on a new dog.

We have seen many foster applicants fall through once they have been approved. This results in a significant waste of our precious volunteer resources. Before submitting an application to foster, please think about how you would answer the following questions:

• Transport goes to the following locations. Please consider if you are willing to travel to these locations in order to pick up a foster dog: Wytheville VA, Staunton VA, Stephens City, VA, Hagerstown MD or York, PA.
• Do you have the time to care for a foster dog that may need special attention, training, and patience?
• Do you have the time provide updates to SSR about the dog you are fostering?
• Are you willing to bring your dog to local events?
• Will you be comfortable talking with approved adopters about your animal?
• Will you be comfortable assessing whether or not an approved adopter’s situation is the best match for your dog?
