Sadie 0068 We adopted Sadie after we were asked to foster. We fostered Sadie because she needed a home that didn’t have any dogs since she they thought she was dog aggressive after arriving on transport. We were looking to adopt a dog since we had just lost both of our long term dogs in the past year and desperately needed a 4-legged family member. We had just fostered our first dog Daniella and she was so easy. There was a desperate need for Sadie to be moved because she appeared to be aggressive. She also had some medical issues since she has shattered pelvis/broken leg. I couldn’t say no, even though I wasn’t ready for having a dog that was more than likely going to be with us for a while. When we picked her up from current temp foster. I was surprised that she was younger than the photos/videos appeared on line. When we started driving home, she talked to us the entire time. My husband and I love a taking dog, we loved her already. Over the next few weeks, I took her on a few surgical consults because the thought was to amputate her broken right leg and do a hip replacement for the left leg. But one of the surgeons gave us encouraging news—no surgery was going to make her perfect. He encouraged us to get her active to use her leg—make her walk slow to force her to use the leg/hip. What really sealed it for us, were people on Facebook who never met her giving their opinion of how best to treat her. My husband and I were like ‘no that’s not going to happen.’ People thought she had a lame leg, but she can and does use her shorter leg all the time. She is not dog aggressive but can be reactive to certain dogs. We have worked with a trainer to correct both her and our behavior. We also socialize her by taking her out in public and get her around other dogs. I admit I’m still hesitant for her to greet other dogs on leash, but she has done well with the ones she has met. She LOVES people and to us that is most important. She also has welcomed foster dogs and puppies into her home. I choose to foster puppies because I’m afraid that other dogs can hurt her leg/hip when they play because she is quite physical. We did have a setback about 4 months of having her at home with us where we thought we were going to have to amputate when she somehow reinjured her right leg. But through different pain meds and massage, she is still going strong on all 4 legs. We regularly take her hiking...not the steep terrain because it bothers her hips, but the nice wide horse trails that tend to be flatter. Sadie walks between 3-5 miles daily, most days we don’t realize that her legs aren’t perfect. Our family absolutely adores her. She doesn’t like to snuggle on the couch, but she does like to rest her head on your feet. She loves to go on car rides—especially if we are getting her a puppiccino from Starbucks. Fran & Jen Tyson
Gracie 0565 I found out about Gracie (SSR Priscilla) through a friend who rescues dogs. Tammy Livingston posted a story about needing a hospice foster for a dog named Priscilla. Once I saw her and the video I couldn't say no. I talked to my significant other Todd, and asked him sweetly “Can we please give this dying German Shepherd a place to be loved before she passes?” He thought about it and said yes! I filled out the foster info for SSR and we made a plan to get her. A lovely lady drove her all the way from San Antonio!!! At first, we could tell she was in pain, scared, tired and didn't know what was going on. When we got her home, we gave a much-needed bath, brushed her, gave her food and water and let her explore our home. We gave Gracie time to settle in before we needed to take her to an orthopedic surgeon to get her leg checked out and to rule out cancer. We saw the surgeon and he suggested an FHO surgery, where they don't replace the full hip but cut off the ball, which we agreed to but first had to get her not anemic and then do surgery. We got her blood count up did the surgery and now she is healing. Mind you while we worked with her to get her blood count up, we taught her how to climb stairs and go down. Let her know that the down stairs couch was hers and that we loved her unconditionally. She had the surgery and healing very well. It is a slow process but she is using the leg more and more. We got her blood tested again and good news everything is improving so we ruled out cancer!! Just bad arthritis. She won the heart of my significant other and I. After thinking about it and talking about it we decided Gracie made out family more complete so we went from Fosters to Adopters! We thank SSR for giving us the opportunity to foster a very sweet and loveable girl!!!! We are glad we have such a sweet angel!!
Abbey/Duchess 0343
When we adopted Abbey in February, we were all a little nervous about how she'd interact with my 14 year old cat, Alistair, as we'd had trouble integrating him and our previous dog. With SSR's help, we cat tested her as best as we could before we brought her home to Pittsburgh. As you can see from this picture, we had nothing to worry about. They're two peas in a pod
We had also been told that she may be dog aggressive, so we enrolled her in a Behavior Buddies class through our local Camp Bow Wow to help her get socialized. We've not seen any instances of aggression towards other dogs, both in class and on walks. She's interested in the other dogs in class, but totally ignores other dogs on walks. She has too much to sniff! We've also tried taking her to the dog park and she had so much fun playing chase with the other pups. She also had a blast with her best friends, Jaws and Drax, who are our friends' dogs that she got to spend the weekend with while we were out of town recently. It was always very important for us to get a dog through rescue, and we could not possibly love Abbey more. She's an incredible dog and we're so thankful to SSR for making it possible for us to find her.
Shadow 0009 This is the story of Shadow - one of the earlier dogs rescued by SSR, and how we found him.
Scrolling through Craigslist one day, I saw an ad for a German Shepherd being rehomed for $150. I clicked on the link, and was taken to this photo- which would permanently scar my mind. The ad stated that the owner was moving and could not take the dog, Shadow, with him. Horrified, I called the number listed immediately and told the man on the phone that I would leave my house at that moment and drive two hours to pick her up. He agreed to surrender her to Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue, so I jumped in my car and off I went. It was a cold January day with snow still on the ground from the previous week, and I was racing like a bat out of Hell to get to Shadow. Click a letter to find an animal or view all.
