Mama Dakota was a stray that appeared at a local's house in the RGV and soon after gave birth under her shed. Dakota gave birth to four "stately" puppies: Alaska, Arizona, Carolina, and Montana.
The finder has reactive dogs in her house, so she was unable to bring the family inside. Thankfully, she did feed Dakota and her pups and started posting on Facebook looking for homes, which is how we found her. One of our volunteers in Virginia was scrolling through Facebook one day and saw the post of GSD puppies that needed homes in the RGV and knew we had to help.
Dakota's Texas foster mom has done a wonderful job making sure the family is cared for to the best of her abilities and even took them to the vet for us to get vaccinated. She says that Dakota is very sweet and loving with humans and will be a great addition to someone's family.
Dakota and her puppies will arrive to Virginia in November 2023 where they will all be available for adoption. I've had Dakota for a week now, she is a sweet dog with velcro tendencies. She follows me around all day and keeps me in her sights. If I leave the house she finds a comfortable place to rest and waits patiently until I come home. She is perfectly house-trained with no accidents. I have not found it necessary to crate her. She prefers to be the only dog in the house and ignores my dog's pleas to play. She is a little timid of new people and we will be working on her walking skills with cars driving by. She will definitely make a loyal companion to whomever is lucky enough to adopt her. Dakota just got spay last week and is doing great. We are working on walking near or alongside vehicular traffic. Sudden loud noises, trucks passing, make her nervous but she is improving. She is quite shy and takes some time to trust new people. She is not very active but does enjoy walking in a quiet neighborhood or park. I definitely consider her low maintenance and she is house trained. She would prefer to be the only dog in the house and enjoys sitting next to her person. She will be around children tomorrow and I will better know how she reacts. She shows some interest in our kitten but has been warned not to chase. She listens well.
