Nacho was rescued from a shelter in Texas. He was found as a stray about a year ago by the same shelter’s animal control and was brought in. Someone in Texas adopted him, but they unfortunately passed away landing him back in the shelter. That's when SSR stepped in to save him! Nacho has now arrived in Virginia and is currently recovering from a difficult neuter surgery. Here's a little we've learned about Nacho over the last week he's been with us: In the medical aspect, Nacho has been diagnosed with Ehrlichia and is currently undergoing treatment for it. He also tested positive for Heartworm, and treatment for this condition will begin shortly. In terms of his personality, Nacho displays signs of severe separation anxiety, necessitating a home environment where he has the company of another dog. He thrives in a setting where his human companions are more frequently present than absent. Though he is not completely potty trained, we're working hard to get him there! While he has reduced the frequency of marking indoors since his neuter procedure, he still occasionally marks. Another important point to note is that he is a significant flight risk and must be leashed when outdoors. In general, fences will not be sufficient to contain him, as he actively seeks escape opportunities. This is especially important to be cautious of as he is not road savvy, and often runs right towards traffic. Nacho's happy and welcoming demeanor is evident through his tendency to enthusiastically greet people, accompanied by minimal barking. He gets along well with both large and small dogs, cats, and young children, though extra small children might be inadvertently knocked over or scratched by his playful paws. However, he is not suitable for households with chickens or other small critters such as rabbits or hamsters. Nacho enjoys snuggling with you in bed, and he often follows you around, expressing distress if he cannot be near you. Simple vocal corrections like "ah-ah!" are effective in guiding his behavior. Despite his medical challenges, Nacho remains a loving and affectionate companion who is working towards better health and behavior!
