(Update - 5/7/23)
After a few weeks of antibiotics and rest, Butter started showing a whole new side of himself. This boy is now grateful for every pet he receives and every human he meets. It’s safe to say that his previous pain and discomfort were significant contributors to the aggression and aloofness that he expressed towards the beginning. And more good news: x-rays showed no signs of hip dysplasia. Talk about a real turnaround!
Butter moved to a new foster home at the end of April (due to the previous foster family having a change in living circumstance). Though Butter has been a bit stressed about all the changes, he has handled it like a champ. Since the move, he has been friendly with all people (not even a single growl), asks for pets frequently, and started letting his playfulness come out. He has been a velcro dog but is starting to take more time and space for himself as he gets comfortable in these new surroundings.
Butter still has limited interactions with other dogs. He shows interest in a way that can trigger defensiveness from other dogs, but he has not been outwardly aggressive with any. He does have a high prey drive towards cats and small animals. He walks well on a leash, but will start pulling when he sees a squirrel. He sometimes engages in attention barking from his crate or when there are other dogs he wants to meet but is otherwise a pretty quiet pup. His new foster has noticed a reactiveness to motorcycles and bicycles. Butter is a fantastic, loving, and gorgeous dog (seriously – strangers are always coming up to compliment him). We’re so glad that he healed and cleared up the fact that he was just in a bad mood for a while. He’s a sweet-hearted pup and whoever adopts this guy will be lucky! --- SSR Butter arrived to his foster home in April of 2023. He is a beautiful boy in need of a patient but firm handler. He was neutered in Texas but arrived to his foster with no "cone of shame" and a pretty bad infection. For this reason, he is currently on antibiotics. Additionally, he is being treated for heartworm and giardiasis. Butter will growl with touch, especially on his hind end. He has a history of right limb lameness and we suspect he may have some degree of hip dysplasia. He is currently scheduled to have x-rays done to confirm. We are working on muzzle conditioning and desensitization to touch and he is doing wonderfully! He displayed some aggressive behavior during his first vet visit and may need to be muzzled for future visits. At this time, the main focus is on his health and ruling out pain as a possible contributor to behavioral expression. Butter was said to be possibly dog aggressive. However, we have not seen any indication of this. He met several dogs at the Frederick Adoption Event and was appropriate with all introductions. He met the other dogs in his foster home through the fence and did not display any concerning behavior. Butter does seem to have a pushy play style, which may be off-putting to some dogs. He would benefit from a handler who can monitor interactions and is experienced with dog behavior/body language. He has done well around respectful children, adults, and strangers. He is non-reactive to bikes and cars and rides well in the car. Butter was vocal in his crate and exhibited some attention barking when he arrived, but has since settled in and goes right into his crate. He has not displayed any separation anxiety or barrier aggression. He has no food aggression towards humans. He has shown some prey drive towards small animals (rabbits, squirrels, etc ) but has largely ignored small dogs on walks. We plan to cat test him this week to further assess his drive. Butter is starting to offer play signals and relax as he settles in. We look forward to seeing him progress in his journey as we work to get him off on the right "paw".
