Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog.
SSR Casper arrived Nov 18, 2022 and is currently getting acquainted with his foster home. At this time, he is recovering from mange and being treated for heartworm at the expense of the rescue. Casper's coat has already begun to grow in and he is certain to be absolutely gorgeous once he has recovered. His foster family consists of 4 children; ages range from 2 years to 16 years of age. Casper has responded positively to all members of the family, but can be overexuberant around little ones and will need to be monitored for nipping, herding, or overly excitable behavior. Older, respectful, dog savvy children or families familiar to the breed and who are able to implement boundaries would likely be his best fit. Casper rides well in the car but is cautious once outdoors and will require some confidence building. He currently resides in a more rural area and has not yet ventured downtown for further assessment in an urban setting. Once he has had some time to adjust to his current surroundings and build a trusting relationship with his foster family, we will begin to introduce him to more stimulating environments. At this time we are unsure of how well he does with cats. He does seem to have a decent level of prey drive when it comes to the neighborhood squirrels. We are hoping to better evaluate his compatibility with cats in the near future. Casper resides with three resident dogs and has done well with initial introductions with all of them. He occasionally struggles having dogs in his space or around his food and will growl as they pass by his kennel. In the week that he has been with us, these behaviors have already begun to improve. Casper responds well to mild-moderate correction and trains with eagerness and engagement. He is easy to motivate; a very intelligent dog that will thrive with the right handler; one who is willing to invest the time and commitment to making him the best dog he can be! If you think that Casper may be a good fit for your family, please submit an application to Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue or contact your caseworker for further information. Thank you!
