Nana is a 1yr old female Belgian malinois being fostered in Waterford, VA who is looking for her forever home! She was saved from a high-kill shelter in Texas where she arrived as a stray. She has been with the rescue for about 2 months now and is undergoing chemotherapy for a transmissible venereal tumors or TVT. TVTs are  malignant (cancerous) tumors . Different from other cancers, TVTs are transferrable between dogs through direct skin-to-skin contact during breeding. She has had surgery to remove her tumor and has already started her 8 weeks worth of chemotherapy. TVTs, when caught and treated early, are 100% curable and do not cause any long term problems. Nana‘s was caught extremely early and she has an excellent prognosis.

She is a petite girl around 50 pounds who is spayed and up to date on her vetting. She is HW positive and already on slow kill treatment.

Nana is housebroken, walks well on a leash, with a prong collar, and is ecollar trained. Nana does not walk well on a nylon flat, a martingale, a harness or a gentle leader. As a foster I work every collar to ensure which tool is the most successful for the dog. Nana requires a prong collar. She will pull you down on walks if you do not use a prong. She rides well in a car. Has excellent people skills and gives amazing hugs.

She is dog and cat friendly- with established boundaries- she’s a malinois so she pushes her limits with them. She will try to establish the alpha role in any dog pack. She will challenge the alpha dog and not back down from them. She does however respond beautifully to the human alpha and will stop her escalation immediately when told to.

She does not go in a crate well but is working on it is. She will go in to get food or a treat willingly so needs more focused training on going in the crate and should be fine in no time. She will require a heavy duty, impact style crate. If Nana knows you’re home and she’s crated, she does get nervous and will fill the tray from salivating.

She is excellent with kids! Super gentle taking treats and food from them. She may try to give small wobbly toddlers a hug and knock them over but she will give them all the kisses and make them better. She loves to snuggle and be close to her FoMom and enjoys a good rainy Saturday in bed watching Netflix.

She shows no resource guarding except when laying on foMoms lap. In fact she will share a bowl of food with another dog and let them take toys right out of her mouth. She does however guard her foMom from other dogs but responds to correction before she does anything.

She has not touched a thing in my house she isn’t supposed to, just dog toys, well and that tray of freshly baked homemade soft pretzels on the counter while FoMom went potty. She will lay next to shoes and chew a dog bone and never touch them. When left unsupervised in the house she will countersurf and help herself to whatever food she can find, such as pretzels, but otherwise is a very polite little lady. She is high energy but also loves a good cuddle and holding your hand. She is the perfect “starter mal”. She has the amazing malinois drive and hyper focus but she is slightly defective and seems to have come with an off switch. She will require an active, balanced training focused home with dog experience. Nana is highly food motivated and will be excellent at any dog sport!

She has 5 more weeks of chemo before she can be adopted but is open to meet and greets. If you’re an interested adopter, and she’s the right fit, if you live in the Leesburg VA area, you can take her home sooner but will have to take her weekly to her treatments in Leesburg.

Sounds pretty perfect right? Well she’s got a few flaws. I don’t think they’re deal breakers and can be trained out.

She cannot be contained! She will climb out of any and every height kennel you put her in. Her vet can confirm. She’s gone on many explorations of their office while getting her treatments.

She will get out of a standard wire crate and is able open the crate doors at the vets office. She is currently crated in a heavy duty vari kennel with a four way locking door. She must wear her ecollar when crated or she will injury herself trying to get out. The collar is powered off and loosened but she is equipment conditioned and thinks she can have vibrate correction if she tries to break the door off. And she will break the door off if given the opportunity.

She is fine alone in the backyard if she knows you’re inside the house. She will come to the door and check to make sure you’re still in there. If she finds out you went out front without her, she will jump/climb over your 6-8’ wooden privacy fence to be with you. If she cannot see you inside, she will dig at the door. She doesn’t have separation anxiety, she just does not like their being a barrier between her and her human. She will nap and sleep at home alone and sleeps in her crate when FoMom is gone. She just likes to be near the humans if she knows they’re nearby.

If you are an approved adopter and interested in setting up a meet and greet with Nana please let your caseworker know!
