Meet Rusty. Rusty was found as a stray, residing in a junk yard in southern Texas. He has been in his current foster home for almost four months (arrived 4/29/2022) and is enjoying the comforts of home while learning how to live as a pet dog within its walls. Perhaps Rusty's best quality is his goofy and affectionate personality. He enjoys the company of people and will happily seek out your lap for attention and petting. He knows no strangers and has won the hearts of everyone I have introduced him to. Rusty does well with the respectful, dog savvy children in his foster home (ranging from 16 years to 2 years of age). He has met several dogs and has done well with slow and proper introductions. He would be best matched with a female or submissive male dog of similar size and moderate energy. Due to his prey drive, I do not recommend placement with cats or smaller animals. Upon arrival, Rusty engaged in marking behavior and required interventional training to address his potty skills. We are happy to report that this behavior has since ceased and he is consistently using the bathroom outdoors. He has also made great strides with his leash manners and has recently started working on recall. He is crate trained and content to quietly sleep in it at night or while we are away from the house. Outside of the crate, he has proved to be calm and quiet; preferring to stay close to his person. Because Rusty was not given proper preventative medication during his time of neglect, he contracted heartworm disease. He is currently being treated for the condition with all expenses paid for by Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue. We look forward to his testing negative in the near future and hope that someone will fall in love with his charismatic personality.
