In February 2022, two fishermen were out late in an isolated area in rural South Texas. As they were packing up to leave, they heard whimpers from an animal nearby. They stumbled upon Lakeland, who lay in the grass crying out desperately for help. Her foot was mangled and bloody; it had been completely twisted and was facing the wrong direction. The men loaded her up into the bed of their truck and tied a large chain around her. The locals in this area too often find injured dogs and do not have the funds or resources to provide any assistance. They took a picture and posted her to social media and sat around waiting. Two hours went by when we came across her post. It was late now, and the gentlemen needed to get home to their families. They told us if we could not agree to take her, they would be removing her from their truck and leaving her in the field. This was unfathomable to us, so we of course said get her to the nearest ER! Lakeland went into emergency surgery, which was a long and complicated process to repair her leg. She had an external fixture placed in March, which remained on her for about 16 weeks. Luckily for her, she has been with me a TX foster throughout her recovery and has made amazing progress. She’s a sweet, vocal, and sassy girl. She’s good with other dogs but would also be fine as an only dog. She loves her toys, especially her stuffed animals and does a great job keeping herself entertained. Totally house trained, not destructive in any way. She’s a relatively lazy girl, loves her dog bed. As she approaches a year in SSR, she just arrived on the East Coast and is now being fostered in Delaware! The beautiful Ms. Lakeland has only been in Delaware for a few days but we have learned that she is completely indifferent towards cats and comfortable adventuring around her Delaware fosters farm. She has met goats, pigs, horses, donkeys and alpacas and only barked a few times at them. She is a total gem and we cannot wait to take her on more adventures!
