Garrett is a sweet little GSD mix who is good with people, dogs and cats. He was one of four dogs found along a road as strays in Texas. Their friend had gotten picked up by another rescue, and the remaining three, including Garrett, were seen chasing the car (see pictures below). After seeing the video, SSR felt obligated to pick up Garrett and his remaining friends (Taylor 2369, Rosalie 2366, and Catalina 2367, who wasn't in the video but was also part of the pack). We think Garrett may have had an owner previously, since he walks very well on the leash, is housetrained, does well in the create and has a basic understanding of "sit" and "paw" (although he needs to work on his responsiveness). He warmed up to us, our two GSDs, and our cat very quickly. He likes being around them but doesn't play too rough like our large dogs do. He prefers to sneak toys into his crate while the other two are distracted with each other, and also enjoys getting attention from the humans in the house. Due to his small size and calm nature compared to typical GSDs, he makes a great lapdog and would also be great for a variety of living accommodations (apartments, townhouses, etc). He is fairly low-energy in the house, but if given room to run (especially outside), gets very excited and can run surprisingly fast for his small size. He is also not super vocal, but can make a wide variety of interesting sounds, especially when yawning or rolling around on carpets. He is easy to carry around and is okay with baths (doesn't complain or try to escape). He is a little picky when it comes to food, so we have to sprinkle freeze-dried liver on his dry food. This also points to the possibility that he may have been spoiled by a previous owner. He is unfortunately heartworm positive, and is currently on a one-month course of antibiotics, after which he will commence the slow-kill heartworm treatment (please note that the entire treatment is paid for by SSR). During the treatment period, his activity levels will have to be limited. He also has a tendency to get overexcited when greeting his humans after a period of separation (e.g. overnight), and sprinkles a little pee in the process. He's been gradually doing it less and less, so it seems like a temporary behavior that will get better as he becomes more used to having humans around him on a regular basis. All in all, Garrett is a sweet and loving dog with no behavioral issues that we've seen. Out of the fosters we've had, he has made the fastest and easiest adjustment to his foster home, and we think he would be a great addition to almost any household (kids, dogs, cats, etc).
