Oakley was rescued from a kill shelter in Texas.  She was likely dumped there because she is blind.  She arrived to her Virgnia foster on November 21st. Oakley came to my home on 11/28/21, the last foster ran into issues with one of her personal dogs. Oakley is a smart, sweet, curious, gentle puppy with a beautiful thick, soft coat. According to her paperwork she was born on August 4, 2021 and dropped off at a Texas shelter with her other two litter mates, Berkeley and Hawk on October 15, 2021. She is currently up to date on her vaccinations, but she will need to be spayed in the near future. Oakley is blind. She was diagnosed with Anophthalmia. Currently, I am working on teaching her basic commands and how to safely navigate a home and the outside world. She has been very good with potty training but we are not at 100% yet.
1/20/22 Oakley has been at my home for 7 weeks. She is potty trained and will go to the door and scratch it when she needs to go out. She has learned “watch” which tells her she is going to run into something, “step” to help her go up and down the stairs, or sidewalks. Once she learns the stairs you don’t have to use the command “step”.  She is knows “kennel”, “ off”  and “no”. We are currently working on “leave it” and “sit”. Oakley loves every person that she meets. She passed a cat tested in Texas but I retested her again in Virginia. Oakley cautiously came up to the cat to sniff, the cat swatted her on the nose and Oakley backed away, barked and walked away.  I do not believe that Oakley has a strong prey drive but she likes to check things out that she smells and hears so there is a chance that she may chase a cat. Oakley has done well with my 3 dogs and a neighbors smaller dog. Oakley is showing signs of being an alpha female and will push the  limits to see what she can get away with. I do recommend slow introductions to other dogs and to be mindful of the personality of potential adopters dogs for the right fit. Oakley does play rough and loves to run and play. I do recommend a fenced in area for Oakley to play in that will contain her and keep her safe but it is not a requirement. Due to being blind, Oakley’s sense of smell and hearing are awesome. She will want to investigate or chase most things that she hears or smells such as wild birds, and squirrels. I have ducks and chickens and Oakley has not paid much attention to the chickens in the coop but she will chase the ducks around the pen (they are a squeaky toy to her, I believe). Oakley is scheduled for her spay on February 3, 2022.    2/24/22 Oakley has been with me just shy of 3 months. She has been spayed and completely healed. She now is 6 months old, soon to be 7 months. She is definitely an alpha and can be selective with who she gets along with. No apartments for Oakley, the noise coming from all directions is too much of a sensory overload for her. She would do best in a quiet home.
