Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. Alton 2288 needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?
Update: Alton had surgery on January 26th to remove his hardware and attempt to make his leg stable (although healing it still needs some support). He will need at least four weeks of crate rest to recover from this surgery.
Alton was found along a busy Texas highway after being hit by a car which broke his leg and pelvis. The finder contacted SSR and we immediately got him the medical care he needed. His back leg and pelvis have been repaired. He made the trip to Virginia on November 13th to start the search for his forever home and continues his recovery in a warm home! He is just the sweetest boy and loves to cuddle up close to any person. He is housebroken and walks well on a leash. He really loves dogs beds and toys. He also really wants to play fetch and seems to like water a lot! Alton had pins and plates put in his rear leg to fix his fractures and is on strict crate rest and leash walks until around the end of December. And boy does he have a lot to say about this! He is a very talkative boy in his crate. He does well in a puppy pen with a dog bed however. He likes to be able to hang out in the living room and watch everyone. He is able to slowly increase his leash walk duration and add in hills. He isn't allowed to do stairs just yet and will wait at the bottom of them for you to carry him up. He's pretty light right now so he's easy to lift. He is having a slight problem with his boy parts hanging out but the vet thinks once he gains back muscle mass in his hind end that will also resolve. He has not meet the resident big dogs yet as he is not allowed to run and play and they are a little crazy. He has meet the resident small dog and does well. He also likes to lay against the other foster dog in the house's pen to be near her. He loves all people that he meets. He really enjoys a good belly rub and a good cuddle. He allows handling all over and lets you cut his toe nails. His potential adopters can take him home while he recovers as long as they are able to keep him calm and rested and are able to take him to a SSR vet for his final post op xrays in December.
