Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. Heidi 2252 needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start?
UPDATE 2/7/22: Heidi was adopted on December 21st, 2021, but was returned by her owner on February 7th, 2022, due to being incompatible with the resident cats in the home. She has shown that she has a prey drive towards cats, rabbits, birds, etc., so she would do best in a home that has no little furry animals. She loves to cuddle, but can be sensitive if approached too quickly in her face area, so would do better in a home with older, considerate kids only.
---
Heidi is a 3 year old German Shepherd that was found abandoned in a park in Houston, Texas. One of our SSR fosters took her in and fostered her in Texas from August through December. On December 3rd she was transported up to Virginia.
Heidi is as sweet as can be and wants nothing more than to spend time with her humans. She would do well in an slightly to moderately active family that loves to go on daily walks, but also likes to cuddle on the couch and watch TV. She is a bit of a velcro dog and as long as she is with her humans she will be happy. Currently, her typical day is a 30 minute stroll through the neighborhood in the morning followed by lots of cuddles, naps, and chewing on her elk antlers and bones.
Heidi loves everyone that she meets and is very quick to warm up to strangers. When meeting someone new, she is giving kisses and asking for pets within moments. She has done well with meeting both men and women. She has not yet met any children.
Heidi used to live with 2 dogs in her Texas foster home and did great with them once properly introduced. She loves to play with other dogs. We believe that she would do well in home with other dogs with the proper, slow introductions in place.
Heidi has shown great house manners and is fully house trained. She is also crate trained and will enter her crate on command, but she will vocalize after you leave, mostly because she is missing her humans. She eventually gets comfortable and settles down. Because she is vocal and shows some signs of separation anxiety, she would do best in a house or a well-insulated townhouse instead of an apartment. I would recommend that her future adopter continues utilizing a crate to work with her on separation anxiety.
Heidi’s favorite thing to do in the house is chew on elk antlers and bones. She also likes to occasionally play with her rope toys. Even with her love for chewing on bones, she has not displayed any inappropriate chewing behavior in the house.
Heidi walks very well on a leash and does not pull unless she gets excited and sees a squirrel, which can be overcome by leash corrections and saying "let's go". She does well with walking past other humans while on walks in the neighborhood. She also knows the command "sit". She is not a jumper and is very gentle with all adults.
Heidi is positive for heartworm, but she is being treated at SSR’s expense. Heartworm is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from dog to dog.
