Koal has a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease and has special needs. Please be sure to read his entire bio for details before submitting an application to adopt him.

Koal was rescued from a backyard breeder in West Virginia with his mom, Piper.  The breeder found him one morning with a large fluid filled mass on his left rear leg and observed he was having trouble walking. They did not observe any injury or trauma to the leg. Koal was surrendered to another rescue with his Mom who in turn asked SSR to take him. How could we say no to that face? He is said to be a full blooded German shepherd but he is a petite little guy so we have some suspicions he may not be or that he is much younger than they reported. But he's adorable non the less!

He is doing well with crate training but struggling with house breaking but making improvements. He is VERY vocal and likes to talk at all times; even with toys in his mouth. He prefers to be held and cuddled when he can see a person. Koal is very eager to learn and explore. He has mastered SIT and is learning down quickly. He likes to play with toys and often mistakes hooman toes for toys. He does have great potential to develop severe separation anxiety so his adopter must ensure they continue crate training and down time for him so we would prefer Koal go to a home with breed experience. Koal is very mouthy and likes to use his teeth to express himself so he is not a good fit for small children. He does well with dogs, cats and bunnies. He was very afraid of a horse he saw but it was also 700X his size so we dont blame him.....

7/7/21 Update Koal is still undergoing vet evaluation for his growth delays to include liver and kidney testing. At this time we do not have a clear diagnosis on why he is so small. His leg mass has resolved and he is getting his strength back and using the limb. He has trouble on stairs at times but is doing significantly better than when we first got him. His foMom is doing water therapy with him. Koal will not be ready for adoption until a final diagnosis is reached. Koal's doggie DNA came back 100% GSD and is a carrier for DM but does not have the trail. His other genetic tests were clear.

7/20/21 Update- Koal has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. A more definitive diagnosis cannot be made at this time due to his age. The vet feels he could live a short life full of expensive medical bills or he could like a full happy life and have no significant complications; he is too young to tell at this point. Koal will need frequent blood work to monitor his kidney function and anemia. He will need to see the vet and have labs drawn every 3 months for the first two years at a minimum. Koal will not be started on a renal diet at this time as this will restrict other nutrients he needs to grow properly. Koal has to go potty every 2-3 hours at this time. He also needs to have unlimited access to water. Koal will need a financially sound home that is prepared to manage extensive vet bills should they arise.
