Meet Kai, a sweet little baby who was surrendered to a shelter here in Texas all by himself because his mama rejected him.
He was dropped off on 3/30 at only a week old and needed to be picked up immediately or he would just be left there overnight with no attention. A wonderful lady went right over and picked him up for SSR, but as of 3/31, they had been unable to get him to eat and needed help. We met half way and I got home with him around 9pm on 3/31. I too was having a struggle. He just would not latch on and refused to even try. Got some formula in with a nippled syringe but not enough. He only peed for me and I was unsure when was his last poo and worried if he was constipated.
Kai was squeezed into their completely booked schedule and went to the vet first thing in the morning on 4/1 for a health check. We were there over an hour. We finally got a poo, but still really struggling with feeding. We also noticed what looked like a bite on a couple of his legs (likely from mama’s rejection). The one on his back leg was swollen and had turned into an abscess and was full of pus and blood.
Before leaving it was determined that until he could figure out how to latch on to the bottle he would need to be tube fed. Honestly, I panicked as I had never done it before, but Dr. Kana (who is amazing btw) made sure I could do it before sending me on my way. Armed with a tube, syringe, and antibiotics we were heading back home.
Over the past couple days Kai has been getting better with every feeding at drinking from his bottle (I always offer bottle first). We’re not 100% off tube feedings but only had to supplement with it twice yesterday! Yay!! I’m thinking (and hoping) any time now we’ll be fully on bottles.
He is doing well and gets so excited each time I wake him up to eat. His eyes and ears are still closed but if his age estimation is correct, we should be seeing his cute little peepers soon!
Easter bunny came early and brought him a lammy to cuddle with when I can’t snuggle him.
Welcome to SSR sweet handsome little Kai!!
