Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog.
Bellatrix is a long hair purebred german shepherd dog. She was transferred from a partner vet in Texas after a heart murmur was discovered during her spay. Bellatrix was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and heart failure requiring surgery. She had her surgery at Texas A&M on 12/1/2020 and did well. She will need medications, twice a day, for at least the first year of her life as her heart remodels. She will require veterinary cardiology follow up appointments in addition to her routine vetting. She arrived to her foster in Virginia on December 20th.
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is an opening between two blood vessels leading from the heart.
A small PDA may cause no symptoms, but a large one may cause poor eating, failure to thrive, or breathlessness. Treatments include monitoring, medications such as anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), and surgery.
