Juliet arrived in her Maryland foster home on September 19. Such a pretty name for such a pretty dog. Sadly her former life has left her emotionally scarred. She is distrustful of people, and painfully shy. At the shelter she snapped at people coming into her bubble. In her foster home she just cowers and doesn’t take any joy in human interaction or being petted. At this time she stays on a 25 foot leash when she goes outside in the fenced yard, just so we can catch her and reel her back in. Thankfully she’s fine with the other dogs and cats, and seems to thrive on a routine. We hope with some time she will come around and learn that people can be good and that petting and love are to be enjoyed, but she’s not there yet. If she is to be adopted in the near future, she will need an adult only household and a very secure fenced area. She is a high flight risk.
Update 11/9/20, sadly Juliet shows only minimal improvement. During the day, we can let her outside with a reasonably good chance of coming in on her own. At night when we let her out, she must have the leash on. She does like a routine, and although I'm not sure you can call it "liking", but she seems to tolerate my elderly mother better than me, but she still does not show affection towards anyone and startles very easily. I wish I had a better update. Only time will tell if she'll improve.
