Update: Introducing Star. Star is a 2 year old female that is hearing and vision impaired, but that does not stop her from being a silly girl that just wants loved. We have had Star for a week and she is coming out of her shell. She has met 3 dogs, big and little and seems to do very well. She sleeps in her crate all night without a peep and when she awakes in the morning, she gives a huge stretch and a howl. She is GSD and Husky mix. Star is very good at letting you know she needs to go outside. As for her vision/hearing, I would say that she sees enough to avoid bumping into things and she can most likely hear vibrations of cars and other things around her that make noise but cannot hear your voice. Star is good at mapping out her surroundings. She is getting so much better walking on a leash and enjoys her walks. We found out she is a water dog and loves to splash around in the creek. Star is laid back and does not require alot of exercise. She has a GPS collar that will go with her when adopted, this will make it easier to find her if she would ever get off leash. I would feel comfortable with her being in a home with a few stairs but not a flight of stairs, unless she is walked up and down them and they are gated. She will adapt to her surroundings quickly and there are some things the adopter can do to help her adapt. We have a deck with several landings and we place a rug at each step down so she understands there is a stair and at the bottom of the ramp we put another type of textured rug and that tells her it is the last step into the yard. She does well riding in a car but does not like being in a crate in a car. She does tend to hesitate walking in the dark, but as she grows to trust her adopter, i am sure this will change. . Oh Star... we are so glad you are under our care now! A neighbor of Star's former owners reached out to SSR about this sweet girl. Her owners did not care for her at all and were happy to give her up. Despite knowing her eyesight was poor (or perhaps nonexistent), they allowed her outside without any restraints and often times did not feed her. She wandered for scraps and is saved from being hit by a car on a daily basis by their other neighbor. Not quite two years old, but such a measly existence! She lived alongside chickens and cats. Respectful other dogs seem okay (proper introductions of course!). This super super sweet girl is going to make someone very very happy. Star comes to SSR from North Carolina.
