Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog.
Glenda was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas with an embedded collar. She received treatment and arrived to her Virginia foster on June 12th. When she arrived to her foster, she had some behavioral challenges due to severe anxiety (despite medication). She was also a bit unpredictable with her foster's young children--she was either super friendly or aggressive, with no warning. It was assumed due to her embedded collar that she likely suffered abuse prior to rescue. We located a board and train in Nelson, Co. that specializes in anxious dogs. The trainer agreed to take her in right away and the SSR community raised the funds! The trainer and her foster decided the name "Glenda" didn't quite fit so we nicknamed her "D" for Denali to honor her husky roots. Glenda also arrived with wound care needs. Her neck wound has healed very well but she still needs dressing changes. This is being taken care of by her foster and trainer, who are both in the medical field. As of 6/21, she is doing well and making progress! She will stay in board and train until she can "graduate." She is smart and learns fast. Very interested in the other dogs but needs introduced in training so as not to overreact or go into protective mode. D is a very outgoing, smart, cheerful, and supremely energetic. Her trainer texted her foster after the first few days to say " I like her a lot." Her foster calls her "a husky disguised as a German Shepherd." She is eager to work and never tires. Before she was leash trained, she pulled like a sled dog! Her adoptive owner(s) will need to meet with her trainer Jess a few times--just as D is trained, her owner will need to be trained on her commands, techniques, and specialized collars. He/she/they will need to commit to ongoing training refreshers and methods after adoption. She will need an owner who is able to detach at times to teach her that good behavior = praise and play and bad = no reaction other than redirection.
