King is our big, sweet fluffy boy that we call Big Bear, Boi Boi and Baby Boy. He doesn't care what you call him as long as you cuddle and pet him. King had a rough life in the past but all he wants is your love and approval. Time, patience and a few treats will help King be brave and learn that new things in his life are good. We think this may be the first time he's been in a home so he is learning that hardwood floors, stairs and toilets aren't scary. Like a little kid, when he is a little scared or nervous, he will put on the brakes, give you a woo and turn away. All he needs is patience, treats and consistency.

He has been a complete gentleman with our resident 65# dog - he will play bow with her and check out all the smells she is sniffing (check out his video). He really enjoys having a friendly, social doggie buddy that helps him navigate his new, much more awesome life. He's been curious and respectful of other dogs that he's met including a small (15#) male dog, a senior pom and a large, playful 2 yo black GSD. We think he would love a doggie brother and sister that will help show him the ropes.

We have tested him with one cat and he did well by being curious and gentle. He showed respect by backing off when the cat let him know he was a tad bit close. He also saw the vet office cat from a distance and was like, "cool". We would recommend a dog-savvy cat that knows not to run and a slow introductions just due to his relative size.

While in the yard, he always checks in with his humans and comes back instantly when you call. If you walk behind a tree, he will rush over to make sure you haven't disappeared from his life. He has loved meeting our neighbors, adults and kids and will gently go over and ask for pets. Mind you, if you stop petting him, he will bump your hand to remind you that a good boi needs scritches. Calm kids would be best for him as a noisy, rambunctious kid might cause him to run away.

King loves his crate and x-pen and sleeps through the night quietly. When you wake up or when you get home from an errand, he will greet you with happy tappy paws, a big waggy tail and a woo-woo. He is afraid to lose the people and place that has been good to him and would thrive in a quieter house that can provide him with a routine and allow him to come out at his own pace. We can't wait to find him his perfect forever family that will show him that life is good, that his people would love him always and that he deserves good things. After 8 years of a less than ideal life, we think you would agree that he only gets the best from now on. And he will reward ten-fold over with all the love and affection that he's been storing up all these years.

If you think you might be King's family, reach out to your caseworker or apply at https://www.shenandoahrescue.org/

King was rescued from a kill shelter in Texas.  He was taken there after his owner died and has been living there, scared, for months.  He arrived to his foster in Virginia on May29th.
