Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog.
Jasper is a shepherd mix, and is about 10 months old. He came to me really boisterous and mouthy, super clumsy, but over all a super sweet heart despite everything.
He likes to try and sit up when he gets his food, but then falls over, he runs into walls (and yourself!), konked his head on desks and tables several times a day, tried to run through the patio door a few times, and likes to try to "jump" the stairs regardless of how many there are. He is super innocent, and will look at you like he "meant to do that".
He destroys soft toys, but will gnaw on rubber toys such as a kong, for hours on end. His favorite is this rubber stick that came along with him. If you need to settle him down, giving him his toy is the best to go about it. He will get jealous if another dog has his rubber toys, but there is no toy aggression, he will just whine till he gets it back.
He loves to be by you, but will get into things if he is not watched. He likes to put his mouth on *everything* and will try to eat it. He is learning the rules of the house though, that inside time is mostly quiet time, and outside time is play time (outside of him chewing on his toys).
We are working on crate training him to work on his potty habits as well as his separation anxiety, and so you can leave the house without forethought. He will go into the crate with treats currently, but he voices his protest for a bit inside of the crate. It just takes time and patience.
With the right owner that will continue to work on him, he will make a fantastic pup. He is submissive, loves to give kisses and tries to climb into your lap. He curls up at your feet and sleeps deeply when he is in the "den" or bedroom. We have no issues with him outside of the crate while we sleep at night. He does not get into things at night, nor potties in the bedroom while we sleep.
He gets along with other dogs, but can get riled up in play, and may play a bit rough. He is also doing great with the cats, and has slowed down on chasing them with correction (both from us and the cats). He just wants to play with them, there is no aggression towards them shown. He would do best in a home with older kids, those who can play and rough house with him. He does sometimes jump up, why younger kids are not recommended. He also likes to give face nibbles with his kisses.
Update 5/19/20 - He is doing so much better with guidance! We are working on crate training and will alert you when he needs to potty in the night. We keep him leashed to us through the day as he likes to pee on soft things (blankets/beds) and are trying to break him of that habit. He *loves* to chew on things (bones, antlers, etc) and run around in the back yard with his toys. He *loves* his food, maybe a bit too much so please becareful with how much you feed him. He likes to chase bugs and things, eat grass etc, and is overall a bit derpy but he is such a sweet boy. He likes to climb in your lap for cuddles and mouthing (which we are working on him with). He is very quick to learn under the right hand and knows sit, drop it, wait, etc. We have a head leash to help him with the pulling while out walking but he is super curious about everything. He does great with other dogs, to the point he is learning to play with Euna (who is a senior) but likes to rough house. He is doing great with the cats (after correction) and generally leaves them alone.
You can get him to settle with one of his chewy toys for which he is happy to play with and then pass out. He loves running around outside and being near his people, but if given freedom, he may get into things. I would suggest keeping him leashed to you while he settles in.
