Iver is one of our special needs pups. I don't like to call him disabled, I just say that he is abled differently. Iver was born with Spina bifida. Most people don't know that dogs can have this. Spina bifida is a deformation in the spine that causes the spinal cord to be compromised. It comes in different severities, from mild to severe. The location of Iver's deformity causes him to not be able to use his back legs. He is also incontinent and that will never change. His foster times his potty breaks to coincide with meals and is also training him with diapers. That being said Iver is a strong, smart puppy who doesn't let this get him down. He can scoot all the way outside by himself and he loves riding in his wagon. He will not be a pocket puppy that can be carried around, he is a GSD, so that means that someone will have to be strong enough to help him the rest of his life. He needs a home with no stairs, at least right now, he is not strong enough to pull his entire body up them. He needs someone that is not gone for a long day. He needs someone that can financially take on a special needs pup. Right now, he is “mouthy”, and his foster is working to correct this. Until this is stopped, Iver would not be a match for small children. We are currently having him fitted for a doggie wheelchair and we are beginning water therapy to increase his strength soon.
