Barrett has arrived in Virginia and has been with his foster family for about two weeks now. They are still learning about each other but this is what we know so far. Barrett was found as a stray in Texas, so his exact age is unknown, but we think he is about 3. He is currently underweight at 68 pounds but it's nothing that a few groceries won't fix. He is up to date on everything, has been neutered, and is ready for his furever home! He is heart worm positive, but I would not let this deter you from meeting and learning more about him. Email me and we can chat more about what this entails.
Training wise, Barrett is a clean slate. When we brought him home it appeared he did not know any commands, however he's picked up on sit, down, and kennel very quickly. We are still working on consistency but he is extremely smart, and food and praise motivated. He understands that he doesn't get attention or get to leave the crate unless he is calm and sits. He is also picking up on how to walk on the leash extremely well. While not required, I would love to see Barrett go to a home that would continue obedience training and then potentially do advanced training, even agility or scent detection, with him because he is so intelligent. Barrett is not a couch potato dog, he likes being outside and engaged. Understandably so, he does have a puppy-like curiosity about things in the house and is learning what is appropriate for him to pick up and what isn't, as such he only has supervised free roam of the house right now. He is crated at night and when his foster needs to run errands. He whines for about 5 -10 minutes or so when he first goes in the crate but then settles down. He keeps his crate clean and has not had any accidents in the house. Barrett loves being outside so a yard is ideal, but not required as long as his new family understands that he is not a couch potato and needs regular exercise. I have no doubt he would love hiking, jogging or just nice long walks. He rides well in the car both in a crate, or loose in the backseat. Barrett loves to snuggle and he will let you know when he feels it's time for a cuddle session. If you sit on the floor with him he will roll onto his back and let you scratch his belly. When I'm sitting on the couch working he will come plop his head on the couch to let me know he wants attention. He is an expert snuggler. When he is very happy his tail wags in a circle. So far both the vet and the groomer have said he's been great. The groomer was completely smitten with him. Barrett may be ok for a first time dog owner if they were committed to working with a trainer, otherwise I feel he would do best with a handler or family who has previous dog experience, it doesn't have to be GSD specific experience, although that would be beneficial.
